LANGUAGE

“Language is the source of misunderstandings.”

(Antoine de Saint-Exupéry)

“Hell is other people.”

(Jean Paul Sartre)

"The best language is silence."

(Eduardo Galeano)

This sentences, sometimes, seem like death sentences to language, to the act of communication. For it is certain that when I say the word “far” and you say the word “far”, we’re probably not referring to the same distance. If I say “I’m afraid”, would you understand the extension of my fear? What do you hear when I say “I miss you”? What do you hear when someone says “help”?  Have you ever said “I love you” to someone? Have you ever heard it? What does “love” mean to you?

LOVE

"Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies."

(Aristotle)
"Love loves to love love."

(James Joyce)

"We're born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through our love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that we're not alone."

(Orson Wells)

"Love is a friendship set to music."

(E. Joseph Cossman)

"We're all a little weird, and life's a little weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love."

(Dr. Seuss)

"It is better to love wisely, no doubt: but to love foolishly is better than not to be able to love at all."

(William Thackeray)

"When you fall in love, it is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake, and then it subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots are to become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the desire to mate every second of the day. It is not lying awake at night imagining that he is kissing every part of your body. No ... don't blush. I am telling you some truths. For that is just being in love; which any of us can convince ourselves we are. Love itself is what is left over, when being in love has burned away. Doesn't sound very exciting, does it? But it is!"

XENOCIDE

Orson Scott Card

Instead she had discovered that rather than magnifying differences between people, language might just as easily soften them, minimize them, smooth things over so that people could get along even though they really didn’t understand each other. The illusion of comprehension allowed people to think they were more alike than they really were. Maybe language was better.
